ELISA Compact Course

Target Group

Technical and scientific staff members, which are interested in using the ELISA technique in the laboratory

Content/Learning Objective

In this course you will learn theory and practice about ELISA technique, from the coating of multiwell plates with antibodies to sample material and computer controlled evaluation / quality control of the results. The course deals with the following subjects:

  • Basics about ELISA technique
  • ELISA procedures: Sandwich ELISA, competitive and non-competitive
  • detection procedures
  • Antibodies: essential part of ELISA
  • Selection of plastic surface and coating
  • Sample material and preparation of the samples
  • Standards and controls
  • Detection systems
  • Parameters of ELISA: Detection limit, accuracy, reproducibility, linearity after dilution
  • Evaluation of data and quality control
  • Trouble shooting: Locate your errors and avoid them

Main Topics

Performing of ELISA technique, optimisation of ELISA components, detecting and avoiding typical errors

Teacher

Dr. Matthias Herkert studied biology in Heidelberg and received his doctors degree at the Institute of Zoology for the biochemical characterization of metalloproteinases. Thereafter, he focused his work on the mechanisms of neuronal degeneration (from 1990-1994 at the Centre of Molecular Biology Heidelberg (ZMBH) and from 19952001 at the Emil-Fischer Centre of the University Erlangen-Nürnberg). In 2001, he entered the Biotech Company mtm laboratories in Heidelberg. There he is responsible for the development of immuno-diagnostic assays for early cancer detection.
