Use and Optimization of Transfection Methods

Content & Learning Objective

Today a host of transfection methods are available for introducing foreign genetic material (i.e., exogenous information) into eukaryotic cells. To ensure effective transfection and the success of experiments, it is crucial to tune the method used to the cell type. This course introduces you to the use and optimization of various transfection methods. It consists of a theoretical part and a practical part.

The theoretical part includes:

  • Presentation of currently used transfection techniques
  • Strategies for optimizing transfection efficiency
  • Transient vs. stable transfection: advantages and disadvantages
  • Transfection of primary cells

The practical part covers:

  • Comparison of the efficiency of various transection methods
  • Application of an optimization strategy
  • Quantitative evaluation and discussion of problems

Target Group

Technical and research workers with basic knowledge of cell culture wishing to learn about transfection of eukaryotic cells

Teacher

Associate professor Dr. Rüdiger Arnold  teaches at the University of Heidelberg as a lecturer in several life science education programs. Dr. Arnold studied biology in Giessen and worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the Max - Planck - Institute of Physiology and Clinical Research in Bad Nauheim. Afterwards he joined the German Cancer Research Center and habilitated at the medical faculty of the Ruprecht-Karls - University of Heidelberg in immunology where he worked in the area of activation, differentiation, and apoptosis in leukocytes and lymphoma. Between 2011 and 2015 he headed the student research laboratory of the Heidelberg Life - Science Lab at the German Cancer Research Center.
